U.S. sanctions hit the ICC hours after Navi Pillay wins Nobel

Hours after former ICC judge Navi Pillay won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, the United States imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court. The measures restrict the court’s access to banking, insurance, software and other services, while companies that keep supplying it face penalties.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the ICC a “rogue court” and threatened to dismantle it. The court rejected the sanctions, while the Nobel Committee said Pillay’s award underscored the rule of law as international legal institutions faced attack.
