Ken Griffin gives Carnegie Mellon the largest individual gift in U.S. higher-ed history
Carnegie Mellon is adding a Miami campus while expanding its Pittsburgh base through a reported gift of more than $3 billion from Ken Griffin, the largest individual gift in U.S. higher-education history. The move puts CMU in the middle of Miami’s push to become a technology and innovation hub without giving up its core research operation in Pittsburgh.
About $2 billion is set aside for a 35-acre Wynwood campus focused on computer science, AI, robotics, technology and innovation. The rest includes $500 million for CMU’s School of Computer Science and flexible support; the Miami campus is targeted to open in 2028 and eventually serve more than 3,500 students with nearly 300 faculty.
