ChatGPT and Codex text get invisible watermarks in the EU
OpenAI will start watermarking eligible ChatGPT and Codex text in the EU over the coming weeks. The move makes provenance a regional default for those outputs, but not a global one at launch.
• The watermark is an invisible statistical fingerprint in word choices.
• OpenAI says current text-watermarking technology has significant limitations.
• The technology will be open-sourced, with detector access for researchers.
API customers can already opt in to text watermarking for select models worldwide. The consumer rollout remains limited to the EU for now.
