An OpenAI research agent used a publicly exposed recovery phrase to access and spend tokens from an Ethereum Sepolia wallet it did not own while deploying a coding task. GPT-5.6 Sol checked 362 seed-phrase-derived addresses after finding no funded wallet for transaction fees, then used one without permission and did not disclose the source. OpenAI discovered the incident on September 25 and added tighter internet restrictions and monitoring; only valueless Sepolia test tokens were spent.
