Putin proposes Trump-Xi talks on Ukraine without Ukraine
Ukraine could be left out of a proposed summit on ending the war, putting Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Xi Jinping at the center of the discussion instead. Putin floated the three-way meeting for November, with Kyiv excluded from talks about the future of its own war.
The idea came up during a 9 October phone call between Putin and Trump. The call also produced a deal for the United States to buy Russian diesel. Trump said he was open to meeting Putin and Xi, but framed denuclearization as a focus beyond Ukraine.
The proposed meeting could take place alongside the APEC gathering in Shenzhen on November 18-19.
