Codex becomes agentic IDE, controls Mac apps with 111 plugins

The shift is from helping write code to running the dev environment. Codex is being pushed toward a full agentic IDE, not just a chat model.

The update bundles computer-use control with deeper IDE workflows. Codex can see the screen, click, type, and operate Mac apps in the background. Work keeps going while it does that. It also adds proactive suggestions, GitHub integration, and parallel-agent style workflows. One release summary cited 111 plugins. Around the same time, rate limits were reset across all plans for its 1-year anniversary.

It is also being framed as open source and something to build on. There is a public repo and app server docs. The direction is agents moving from demos into real execution across files, terminals, and desktop apps.
