GPT could strip SynthID Bio watermarks from AI-designed proteins

Watermark Problem

AI-designed proteins can now carry a watermark without losing their function, but researchers immediately questioned whether the marker will survive contact with real design workflows. That turns a promising biosecurity tool into an arms race between identifying synthetic biology and editing the signal out.

Google DeepMind open-sourced SynthID Bio on September 30, 2026. Coverage the next day reported that the method watermarked AI-designed protein binders without disrupting them. Researchers then raised concerns that GPT could remove the watermarks, leaving the proof of concept functional but vulnerable to the same generative tools it is meant to track.
