U.S. initial jobless claims fall below 200,000
The U.S. labor market stayed unusually firm as initial jobless claims fell to 197,000 for the week ended Sept. 26, below the 200,000 estimate. Continuing claims also dropped to 1.701 million, the lowest level since 2023, pointing to limited layoffs and fewer people remaining on unemployment.
Manufacturing is still growing, but the pace cooled. The ISM manufacturing PMI came in at 54.5, down from 54.8 expected and the lowest reading in three months, though anything above 50 still marks expansion.
