China’s gold imports already topped 2025’s full-year total by August
China imported more than 1,100 tonnes of gold through August 2026, already beating its full-year 2025 total of 886 tonnes. The country spent a record $158.8 billion on those purchases, versus $96.5 billion for all of last year.
The buying is coming from both the central bank and private investors as domestic stocks, property and bonds offer weaker returns. Imports had already crossed 1,000 tonnes earlier in the month, according to additional reporting.
