Stanford AI Index: 89% drop in researchers moving to US since 2017

US policy is tightening access to its most advanced AI models, and critics say that risks turning leadership into a bottleneck instead of an advantage. The new argument is that if frontier access shrinks, everyone else builds on older US systems, weakening US influence even while top labs stay ahead. That comes as Stanford’s 2026 AI Index shows AI researchers moving to the US have fallen 89% since 2017.
